The Kapp Putsch, Hour by Hour

img_jason_bio

On a Saturday morning in March 1920, five thousand soldiers marched into Berlin and overthrew the German government without firing a shot. Five days later they marched out again, beaten not by an army but by an entire city that simply refused to work.

The Kapp Putsch is the strangest coup in modern history, farce and tragedy so tightly bound that they cannot be separated, and the week that really set the Weimar Republic on its road to ruin. My new novel, Body Number Ten, opens in its immediate aftermath, so here, step by step, is what actually happened: the plotters, the night the generals refused to act, the five days, the aftermath, and the price Germany paid for its victory.
