I’m Jason Collings, writer of the Alaric von Trelow Mysteries. My grandmother left Prussia as a child, after the Great War, a refugee from what is now Poland, but prior to 1918 had been Germany. Her family ended up in London, but by the time I was born my family was in Cornwall – beautiful and remote. I studied modern history at Oxford University and for the past thirty-five years have read and studied Weimar Germany and the wars to either side of it. I’ve visited the museums, the battlefields, the archives and libraries, I’ve walked the streets, eaten the food, handled the artefacts, worn the clothes, and walked a mile in the boots. I can honestly say that know the Berlin of the 1920s better than I know my own city.
When, on New Year’s Day, 2023, I began to write, it was on the back of a lifetime of creating stories, for myself, family, and friends. But with children off at university or beyond I had the time to ‘do it properly’ – whatever that means.
Now, almost three years later, the first three books tracing the Alaric von Trelow Mysteries are published, and available on Amazon: Prussian Blue, The November Criminals, and Red Berlin.
